Subatomic Particles

A CodeSights flagship for the physics crowd: 87 subatomic particles with mass, electric charge, spin, type, discovery year and mean lifetime, each from its {{Infobox particle}}. Mass is normalized to MeV, parsing both the figure templates and the named physical constants for the electron, proton and their kin. The famous finding is that mass spans more than ten orders of magnitude, from the near-massless neutrinos and the 0.511 MeV electron to the 173 GeV top quark, so any mass axis must be logarithmic. The discovery years trace physics itself: the electron in 1897, the particle-zoo decades of the mid-20th century filling the meson and baryon tables, then the targeted Standard Model captures, the W boson and the top quark, and the Higgs boson in 2012. Types form a closed set (quark, lepton, gauge boson, scalar boson, baryon, meson), statistics split fermion from boson, and spin is quantized in halves. The Z boson shares an article with the W and is omitted rather than shown with the wrong mass. Nine acceptance tests, one enforcing the 25 percent fill rule on every column. A companion to the Periodic Table, one level down.

How big is the Subatomic Particles dataset?

87 rows in one CSV file, with 13 columns in total: Particle, Particle_ID, Type, Statistics, Generation, Composition, Mass_MeV, Electric_Charge_e, Spin, Antiparticle, Discovery_Year, Mean_Lifetime_s, Particle_URL.

Where does the data come from?

It is built by programmatically scraping en.wikipedia.org, last pulled on 2026-10-18. Datasets are versioned; older versions stay downloadable.

Is the dataset free to download?

Yes. Every CodeSights dataset is completely free as a CSV download; a free account is all it takes. Anyone can preview the data without signing in.

Can I see the code that built this dataset?

Yes. The exact Python scraper that built it is viewable on the dataset page by any signed-in member, so every number is reproducible.

Can the data contain errors?

Automated scraping leaves room for error and the underlying sources change over time, so no version is guaranteed accurate or complete. If a number matters, verify it against the original source.
